Newport public safety reports: Thefts, distrubances


A pallet jack, dolly and hand tools were taken from a vehicle in the 1600 block of Fourth Avenue Dec. 20. A padlock was removed from the truck to gain access to the tools.

An 87-year-old Newport woman lost at least $500 after she was contacted by scammers telling her that her computer had a virus. They offered to clean the computer for her for $500 in iTunes gift cards and got her credit card numbers. Deputies advised she monitor her cards, block the number and get her computer checked.

A package was stolen from the 100 block of Second Avenue Dec. 22. Loss: $15.

A 30-year-old South St. Paul man was arrested Dec. 23 on charges of stealing a car from the SuperAmerica parking lot, 1624 Hastings Ave. While the car owner went into the store to pay, Douglas Johann Evens reportedly hopped in the car and taunted the owner as he drove away. Evens later came back to SuperAmerica from the woodline next to the store and got into his own vehicle. Deputies arrested him during a traffic stop after he sped away and drove through stop signs.


A 16-year-old Newport male was trespassed from a home in the 300 block of 11th Street after being invited over by a 14-year-old resident without the homeowner's permission Dec. 24. The homeowners asked him to leave but the 16-year-old wanted his cellphone which he had left inside. The juvenile was asked not to return to the home.

A 35-year-old Minneapolis woman was transported to Regions Hospital after a family fight in the 500 block of 11th Street Dec. 24. The woman was reportedly extremely upset and difficult to understand because she had been drinking. A preliminary breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol content of 0.17.
