Lions Club partners with Cub Foods to offer diabetes screenings
WOODBURY — A new Lions Club initiative aims to help awareness of Type 2 Diabetes with events to detect the risk for diabetes and prediabetes.
The Minnesota Lions Diabetes Foundation and local Lions Clubs will partner with Cub Foods to host a series of Diabetes Alert Days events throughout the Twin Cities and Duluth.
Woodbury's Tamarack Village Cub Foods location will host the first event Saturday, March 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The events will offer members of the public an opportunity to determine if they are at risk for diabetes and connect with resources that can help.
Participants will also receive free goodies and a change to win a Fitbit.
According to a Lions Club new release, one in three Americans are on their way to developing Type 2 Diabetes, but most don't know it.
People who lose about 5 to 7 percent of their weight, the release states, can cut their chances to developing diabetes in half.
Properly managing diabetes can help those who already have it live long, health lives.
Cub Foods pharmacists will offer screenings, free blood glucose tests and free blood pressure tests.
The will also provide information about their My Diabetes Coach Program, which includes two one-on-one consultations with a pharmacist, a class and a grocery store tour.
The programs and events are free and available throughout the Twin Cities and Duluth.
The Minneapolis Health Department, Healthy Northland, YMCA and University of Minnesota Extension will also partner with the initiative to provide resources and healthy food samples.
